Report says Stuttgart is developing an EV that will go on sale in 2019
Mercedes-Benz is looking to field a pure-electric SUV that will take on the Tesla Model X, as well as future offerings from Jaguar and Audi, Autocar reports. The Stuttgart-based automaker is said to be working on a unique SUV that will be unveiled in concept form at the Paris motor show this fall, closely previewing a production vehicle that will go on sale in 2019.
The SUV EV is one of several electric models that Mercedes is reportedly working on, including a uniquely styled sedan that will challenge the Tesla Model S. Stuttgart is looking to expand its range of electric vehicles beyond the B-Class Electric and Smart Fortwo.

The SUV will also go up against the upcoming Audi Q6, which will be available as a hybrid and as a pure electric, and is expected to match its 250-mile range. Stuttgart is developing all-new platforms for the SUV and the sedan, ones that will offer semi-autonomous driving modes and fully autonomous capabilities down the road.
In terms of size, the Mercedes EV is expected to be positioned close to the GLC- and GLE-Class. No informative spy photos of the vehicle have been seen — the Mercedes EV is being developed with greater-than-usual secrecy, with the prototype shop outside of Stuttgart reportedly assembling the concept that we’ll see in Paris this October.
